The new De slimste mens app

De slimste mens (The Smartest Person) has been one of the most popular quiz shows in the Netherlands for years. With its app, Dutch public broadcasting organisation KRO-NCRV brings that excitement to mobile devices: a playable version of what you see on TV. In the app, players take turns competing one-on-one, always answering at least one question from the broadcast. Fast, competitive, and relatable.

Keeping the app up-to-date
The app had been built in React Native for years to ensure the same smooth experience for iOS and Android users. However, due to the rapid development of iOS, Android, and React Native, the app had fallen behind, and important features were at risk of being unsupported. The app therefore needed a major update to keep players playing smoothly.

A recognisable redesign
In 2021, the app received a complete makeover: a redesign that better aligned with the TV show's branding. With over two million accounts and around 200,000 active users, the bar was set high for stability and reliability.

Smartly built, smartly maintained
The new app is also built in React Native and written entirely in TypeScript, allowing developers to easily switch between front-end and back-end. With the introduction of Expo, a framework for React Native with an extensive library of built-in features, extensions and upgrades are simple, and deployment is faster. In addition, the team at De slimste mens manages the questions themselves via a custom CMS, allowing them to easily add new content and have direct insight into all analytics.

Ready for new seasons
In addition to continued development, we handle maintenance, bug fixes, and SLA work. NPO Tag has also been integrated for analytics, and data is automatically cleaned. The slimste mens app feels like a product that has been carefully and lovingly crafted. The app is ready for new seasons!
