How do you connect millions of vacationers on Europe's railways? Every year, over 750,000 adventurers board trains with an Interrail pass. Together, they make 5.9 million trips, covering more than 1.4 billion kilometers. To connect these travelers smartly and safely, we've expanded the existing Interrail app with a new feature.

Among hundreds of thousands of Interrailers, there was a huge demand for a way to connect with fellow travelers during their train trips. People were turning to messy Facebook groups and scattered forums in droves. Interrail wanted to amplify that social magic: a better, easier, and safer way to find fellow adventurers when sitting alone in a carriage. That sounds simple, but facilitating meetups across thousands of speeding trains through 33 countries comes with major challenges.

From data chaos to proof in two weeks
To test if this idea was feasible, we built a prototype during a two-week Jumpstart. By cleverly combining AWS Lambda and OpenSearch, we simplified all the complex train segments. Co-ordinates and schedules became searchable in the blink of an eye. After fourteen days of crunching numbers and mocking data, we had our validation: yes, this matching algorithm runs lightning-fast at a scale of millions of travelers!

Technical data wilderness
The Jumpstart proved the concept was viable, but one piece of the puzzle was still missing. European railway data is a patchwork of national systems. Train numbers change the moment a train crosses a border, night trains cross date lines, and a staggering 15% of booked stations lack any form of location data. For instance, if a Dutch traveler enters "Brussel," the system doesn't automatically realize that a French travel companion is boarding at the exact same station under the name "Bruxelles." And what do you do with a city that has eight different main stations, like Paris? The app needed to show a single clear hotspot on the map, not a jungle of scattered pins.

Getting privacy and safety on the right track
Because the DiscoverEU program relies on grants from the European Commission, strict privacy regulations applied. No gray areas, just tight GDPR frameworks. It created a fascinating tension: without consent to process travel data, the map stays empty and the social feature fails. But try explaining that consent request in a way that makes an eighteen-year-old spontaneously tap "yes." On top of that, meeting someone in a cafe is easy: if it gets awkward, you walk away. On a train speeding toward Budapest, you can't just step off. How do you nudge young travelers toward a meetup without it feeling uncomfortable or unsafe?

Built fast, zero (train) delays
In just under 3.5 months, the DiscoverEU app (built in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android) gained a brand-new Discover tab. Not a forced dating mechanism, but a friendly travel companion. On an anonymized hotspot map, travelers can now see at a glance which cities are buzzing. That map runs on a custom-cleaned reference dataset that smooths out all confusing station names. Are there fellow DiscoverEU travelers on the same train? The app sends subtle train nudges to break the ice.

The ultimate friendship accelerator on European rails
To extend that digital click to the platform, Interrail introduced the blue ribbon. Tie it to your backpack, and everyone instantly knows you're open to a chat. The biggest success? Despite the mandatory and strict privacy pop-up, an astounding 99% of users immediately gave permission to share their data. And that’s how Interrail turned a rigid train timetable into the ultimate friendship accelerator on the European rails!

"Q42 helped us take a new concept for Interrail from an early idea to fully delivered features within our existing systems. From assessing technical feasibility and shaping the scope and design together with Fabrique, through to delivery, they proved to be a highly adaptable and collaborative partner. Their ability to work closely with our internal teams, align with our ways of working, and consistently maintain quality while meeting deadlines was invaluable."
